·noun An instrument for measuring the direction, duration, and force of earthquakes and like concussions.

Wikipedia

Seismometer

A seismometer is an instrument that responds to ground noises and shaking such as caused by quakes, volcanic eruptions, and explosions. They are usually combined with a timing device and a recording device to form a seismograph. The output of such a device—formerly recorded on paper (see picture) or film, now recorded and processed digitally—is a seismogram. Such data is used to locate and characterize earthquakes, and to study the Earth's internal structure.

Examples of use of SEISMOGRAPHS
1. Solidum said seismographs have already recorded some small aftershocks.
2. Geological Survey said the collapse itself registered on seismographs as a 3.'–magnitude earthquake.
3. Ausbrooks wouldn‘t speculate on what could be causing the earthquakes, saying he wanted to see what data the seismographs capture.
4. AM –– Long after the shock waves fade from seismographs, the impact of Monday‘s mammoth blast in North Korea will unsettle the peace of East Asia and beyond.
5. CNN meteorologist Chad Myers noted that seismographs on Midway Island – in the north Pacific, some 1,800 miles away from Guatemala City –– registered the earthquake.
